Free Range Farm Gate Poultry

We offer Free Range Farm Gate Poultry. It’s probably a good thing that poultry and poultry products can only be sold from the farm gate in limited quantities. This means that due to regulations in Ontario, no farmer can get too big by having too many laying hens or meat birds without buying the right to large quantities with “quota”. With small operations like ours,  consumers need to come to the farm to purchase chicken, eggs, and turkeys and while doing so can verify for themselves how the chickens or turkeys are being raised.

Because of many plays on many words—i.e., free-range, free-run, cage-free, naturally raised, naturally produced, drug-free, cruelty-free, strictly grain-fed, etc.—it becomes very confusing to what each “selling phrase” means. Basically, we find that you are being told the good and not being told the bad, which is basic marketing strategy.

For our chickens: We feed no wheat, no soy, and no GMOs, all corn is certified organic, field peas is our source of protein, and barley and oats round out the grain portion of their diet. Depending on the season we supplement their feed with ingredients like kelp and flax oil.

We have as many as 14 rare breeds of laying hens running around our farm. They are let out to roam at about noon each day and left to pasture, forage and bathe pretty well anywhere they want. If we need an area “chicken free” we have to fence them out rather than fencing the birds into one area.

Our customers rely on the health of our chickens, the taste and goodness of the meat as well as the eggs. Because of the rare and varied breeds of chickens on the farm, we have brown, blue, green, white, beige, speckled, and sometimes even purple eggs. We encourage our hens to hatch their own chicks. Every year a mom usually emerges from one of the barns with some young.

We are raising up this year's meat bird orders. Since most of our birds are sold long before they go for their “arctic vacations,” the time to preorder is now!
